Mattias Backlund was drafted by the Riga Reign in the Season 18 VHL Entry Draft with the 23rd overall pick.

After being drafted by the Reign in Season 18, Mattias was sent down to the Gothenburg Eagles for the season. In Gothenburg, Mattias had a record of 35-34-3 with a .903 save percentage and a 4.58 G.A.A. It was a pretty rough season for both Mattias and Gothenburg but they mangaed to make the playoffs as the top seed with 73 points which was just 2 over 2nd place Kolari. In the playoffs, Gothenburg beat Kolari in just 5 games to advance to the finals and play the Brampton Battalion who had a historic season dropping only 5 games. It was a sweep in the finals for Brampton. Mattias had a record of 4-5-0 with a 0.895 save percentage and a 3.71 G.A.A.

In Season 19, Gothenburg was rebranded as the Oslo Screaming Seamen. Mattias was sent back down to Oslo for the season and posted a record of 30-26-6 with a .901 save percentage and a 4.24 G.A.A. It was a tough season for Oslo in their new home city. Oslo finished with 76 points which was 16 points back of the last playoff spot held by Kolari.

In Season 20, league wide changes were made and the NHL/AHL minor system was done with. Now the VHLM was it's own entity so a re draft of all players was done. Mattias ended up in Bern to play for the Royals. Bern had a very strong season while Mattias had an okay one. Mattias had a record of 41-27-3 with a .876 save percentage and a 3.87 G.A.A. Bern finished with 92 points which was 9 points higher than the 3rd place Kolari team. In the playoffs, it all came together for Bern as the team beat Oslo in the 1st round in a minor upset before sweeping the finals against Brampton. Mattias had a record of 8-0-1 with a .901 save percentage and a 3.24 G.A.A. Bern were Founders Cup champions and it seemed like Mattias was coming into his own.

Mattias ended up in Ottawa for Season 21 and he had his best season to date. Mattias had a record of 64-7-1 with a .895 save percentage and a 3.20 G.A.A. Ottawa ended up running away with the Prime Ministers Cup with 129 points which was 36 points higher than 2nd place in the league. In the playoffs, Ottawa would own the league with a 5 game series over Saskatoon and a sweep over the Kolari Panthers. Mattias had a record of 8-1-0 with a .920 save percentage and a 2.34 G.A.A. It was a great season for Mattias and he continues to prove he is one of the VHLM's best. Will he get his shot in the VHL?

Season 22 came around and Mattias found himself back in the VHLM. He didn't pout around though and put up another wonderful season with a record of 58-8-4 with a .911 save percentage and a 2.31 G.A.A for the Minot Gladiators. SV% wise and G.A.A wise this was his best season yet. Minot finished 1st in the VHLM and won the Prime Ministers Cup. However, the Gladiators were upset in the 1st round of the playoffs by the Brampton Battalion in 6 games. Mattias had a record of 2-2-2 with a .870 save percentage and a 3.39 G.A.A. Disappointing end to a great season.

 

Season 23 - Minot Gladiators

Around this time, Mattias thought he was better than the VHLM after back to back Founders Cup wins and back to back Prime Ministers Cup wins but Minot management thought he was to blame for the loss against Brampton so he was benched for the season after not making a VHL team.

Season 24 and Minot still didn't really play Mattias. In 19 games, Mattias had a record of 10-7-2 with a .895 save percentage and a 3.44 G.A.A. Minot finished out of a playoff spot with 81 points which was 25 points back of the Brampton Blades.

In his last VHL/M season, he was sent back down once again but made a commitment to Ottawa and was the backup/starter. Mattias had a record of 16-6-0 with a .887 save percentage and a 3.12 G.A.A. Ottawa didn't make the playoffs with just 76 points, that was 37 points back of the Brampton Blades for the final playoff spot.
