Traditional Realistic Potential Rating (1-10)
(a player’s realistic potential ability):

10. Generational Talent – a player for the ages, one who can do things with a puck that no other player would even contemplate doing. Very, very few players will be deserving of this rating, probably one per decade.

9. Elite Talent – possesses the potential for greatness, a perennial All-Star throughout his career.

Defense: Daniel Braxton, Mitch Higgins, Alexander Valiq

Goaltender: CAL G, Skylar Rift, Sandro Clegane

 

8. First-Line Forward/ No. 2 Defenseman / No. 1 Goaltender – players with definite skill that might be just a cut below elite status, but still possessing All-Star potential.

Defense: Elijah Incognito, Malcom Spud, Vladimir Boomchenko
Forward: Tukka Reikkinen, Shawn Muller, Anatoli Zhumbayev
Goaltender: Jakab Holik, Brick Wahl, Benjamin Glover

 

7. Second-Line Forward/ No. 3-4 Defenseman / Journeyman No. 1 Goaltender – players not quite good enough to play on the top line or pairing on a regular basis, but still possessing enough talent to contribute offensively, defend with some authority, or competently play the goaltender’s position for long stretches.

6. Third-Line Forward/ No. 5-6 Defenseman / Backup Goaltender – generally speaking, players whose game is defensively-oriented, or whose abilities aren’t quite good enough to land full-time duty on the second line, top two defensive pairings, or the No. 1 goaltending position.

Defense: Blake Knight, Gregory Glass, Mattis Trumbauer
Forward: Azmet Ali, Kendrick Cole, Pete Stockton
Goaltender: Rock Star, Vincent Vega, Joanna Akerfeldt

 

5. Fourth line forward / No. 7 defenseman / depth goaltender – players that populate the 4th line, will fill in for injured defensemen, or have some ability to play goal in the VHL but are mostly very good minor league goaltenders. Think of any enforcer you care to name, or any energy player you care to name, or any unlucky defensemen or goaltenders that don’t quite have enough talent to crack an VHL lineup full time.

 

4. Top minor league forward / defenseman / goaltender – players unlikely to have long careers in the VHL, but they’ll be recalled when injuries or other circumstances arise.

 

3. Average minor league forward / defenseman / goaltender – players who will in all likelihood spend their entire careers in the minor leagues.

 

2. Minor league role-player – players who populate minor league rosters for the purpose of populating minor league rosters. Mostly VHLM players.

 

1. Borderline minor league player – players one step away from the beer leagues.
 

 

Realistic Probability Rating (A-F)
(the player’s realistic chances of achieving their potential):

A – All but guaranteed to reach potential – 100 percent metaphysical certitude that the player will play up to his abilities as noted by his potential rating. In this case, the potential rating is multiplied by 100 percent for depth chart purposes, signaling that the player is a lock to reach his given potential.

B – Should reach potential, could drop 1 rating – likely to reach potential, but may have a hole or two in his game that will keep him from reaching his full potential. The potential rating is multiplied by 90 percent for depth chart purposes, which indicates slightly less certainty about a player’s future performance.

C – May reach potential, could drop 2 ratings – has shown some flashes, but may ultimately not have what it takes to reach his potential. The potential rating is multiplied by 80 percent for depth chart purposes to show the uncertainty of a player reaching his potential.

D – Unlikely to reach potential, could drop 3 ratings – a player who has a chance to reach his potential but is unlikely to do so. The potential rating is multiplied by 70 percent for depth chart purposes, indicating that the player’s potential is extremely fluid.

F – A player possessing little potential who has a mountain to climb just to reach the outermost boundary of that potential. The potential rating is multiplied by 50 percent depth chart purposes.

Matt Denning

Nationality: 

Grade: 7.0C

VHL Comparable: AK47

Analysis: Matt Denning looks like he could definitely make an impact at the VHL, although exactly how much impact he has is up in the air for sure. The BC native appears to have all the tools to be able to put up points in the VHL; he has a VHL-level shot already, he has good hockey sense, and his skating is above the level of his current peers as well. The big knock scouts have against Denning is that his agency is brand-new to the VHL, and there is no guarantee that he sticks around for the long haul. If he does though, look for Denning to become an elite 2nd line winger or low-end 1st liner.

 

 

Daniel Yip

Nationality: 

Grade: 1.5D

VHL Comparable: Logan Xylon

Analysis: Yip was just released by his VHLM team for his pathetic work ethic, so that just about sums up his VHL potential.

 

 

Sadio Salah

Nationality: 

Grade: 8.0D

VHL Comparable: Motherfucker Sharpe

Analysis: Salah might be the biggest boom-or-bust prospect in this entire draft. His agency has produced Hall-of-Famers and superstars alike, so many pundits hope that Salah can continue this trend. However, it just doesn't look like he's going to reach that level of stardom, given his current work ethic. Sadio rarely shows up to practice, and even when he does, he mails it in. This trend is seeping into games as well, as you can see Salah taking multiple shifts off over the course of the same. It's a shame though, as he oozes offensive skill, and when driven, can stickhandle through the entire opposing team and score. Salah has 1st line potential but a 4th line work ethic right now.

 

 

Rianna Tam

Nationality: 

Grade: 1.0C

VHL Comparable: Hailey Cattrall

Analysis: Not going anywhere fast.

 

 

Jules Cedric-Labrie

Nationality: 

Grade: 6.5B

VHL Comparable: Sami Zayn

Analysis: Finally, a Frenchman is back in the VHL. After a long absence, France has VHL representation again. They get it in the hard-hitting grinder Jules Cedric-Labrie, a Lyon native. Cedric-Labrie projects as a bone-crunching pest at the VHL level, should he make it all the way. He plays a nearly identical style as Helsinki Titans winger Sami Zayn, and if Cedric-Labrie can reach the level that Zayn is, whatever team that drafts him will be more than happy.

 

 

Carmen Fung

Nationality:  

Grade: 1.5D

VHL Comparable: Ales Blasek

Analysis: Not making the VHL.

 

 

Oskar Ingolfsson

Nationality: 

Grade: 7.0B

VHL Comparable: Xander Finn

Analysis: Icelander Oskar Ingolfsson may not have the talent of fellow Icelandic legend Grimm Jonsson, but that doesn't mean Ingolfsson doesn't project to be a VHL player either. The Suðureyri-native plays a physical game, and uses his bruising hits and muscle to overpower opponents in the corners and battles for pucks. He isn't a natural scorer, so this physical play will most likely be his calling card for his career. Said career will most likely be spent on checking lines at the VHL level, where Ingolfsson will do his best to wear down opponents with his physicality.

 

 

X-Wing @Aliciousness

Nationality: 

Grade: 6.0C

VHL Comparable: Max von Hohenzollern

Analysis: Aliciousness is new, so his rating here could definitely change. We don't know too much about him, only that his agency is new to the league. According to scouts who have seen @Aliciousness play, he projects as a scoring forward.

 

 

Birkir Hólm Guðnason

Nationality: 

Grade: 7.5C

VHL Comparable: Lukas Muller

Analysis: Guðnason certainly has a huge weight on his shoulders as a franchise cornerstone for the Cologne Express right now. As one of the few prospects in a bare cupboard, the Express will need Guðnason to develop hard and fast. He has big potential no doubt, but will it be big enough to carry Cologne out of the league's dungeon right now? The Icelander has all the makings of a star forward, with great hockey sense and a lethal wrist shot, so Cologne is lucky to get a player of Guðnason's skill level for free.

 

 

David Kiaskov

Nationality: 

Grade: 6.0B

VHL Comparable: Verner Reinholdt

Analysis: David Kiaskov can do it all; the Canadian-born winger's playstyle is a "jack-of-all-trades, master of none" one. He is already well-versed in the VHL game, playing for Team Canada at the S55 VHL World Junior Championships and gaining valuable experience as a member of the forward core. Kiaskov isn't a sure thing to make the VHL since his agency is new, but we've got a good feeling about him; I think he'll see time in the VHL eventually, although he may be a bit of a project pick. I could definitely see him as a very good utility winger who you can send onto the ice in all situations.

I feel like I say this every week when I review your media spots but you've been on fire the past month or so. This is looking to be a strong draft class with both top end talent and depth. I don't think any of these grades are off. Similar to your other two installments, there are new and returning members that'll be drafted at the top of the draft or provide nice depth.
