The recent recipient of the Minnesota Mr. Hockey award, given to the state’s most outstanding senior high school hockey player, has officially declared for the S57 VHL Entry Draft. The smooth-skating center iceman recently signed on the dotted line to play for the Las Vegas Aces of the VHLM for a one year, $1 million contract. O’Callahan comes from a great bloodline of hockey talent. His father, Jack, played seven seasons in the NHL for the Blackhawks and Devils and was part of the famous 1980 US Olympic team that defeated the Russian powerhouse. Calder, named after the first president of the NHL (Frank Calder), is looking to make a name for himself in the VHL.

Prior to declaring for the VHL Draft, O’Callahan played three years at Eden Prairie High School in Minnesota where he put up impressive numbers. In 75 career high school games, he netted 65 goals and tallied 95 assists and led the state in points all three years. Widely considered the nation’s top high school talent, O’Callahan is looking to turn heads at the VHL level.

Strengths:

Skating: The first thing that sticks out when watching O’Callahan play is his skating ability. His edgework is second-to-none and uses his skating to create space against defenders. His straight line speed is also impressive and if you give him a step, he will blow by you in the blink of an eye.

Playmaking: O’Callahan is a playmaking centerman, no doubt about it. He uses his aforementioned skating ability to create space and make plays all over the ice. The playmaking ability is primarily comprised of vision and passing. His vision on the ice is fantastic, he sees the game at a high level and the game seems to slow down for him when he has the puck.

Leadership: The two-time captain at Eden Prairie is a natural leader. He leads by example with his dynamic play and non-stop motor, but also is a vocal leader who always looks to build team camaraderie amongst his teammates.

Weaknesses

Shot: Despite his dynamic skating and playmaking ability, he has room to improve when it comes to his shot. He never seems to beat a goalie outright with a shot and the majority of his goals seem to come from right in front of the net or breakway type plays. This is an area he is actively working on improving as he takes his game to the VHL.

Physical Play: He doesn’t necessarily shy away from the physical aspect of the game, but he has been known to get off his game when the opposing team focus on playing  physical game against him. The VHL and VHLM will have bigger, stronger players so he will need to learn to adapt to this style of play if he wants to have success at this level.

Defense: O’Callahan is an offense-first player and always has been. He has been able to hide his defensive weaknesses with his tremendous offense game. However, playing at this level of competition will challenge him to be a more rounded, two-way player. Expect coaches to spend some extra time with him in this area.
