Jack Shephard - The Biography

I. "What did you do for a living before you became Moses?"

Born in December of 1969 in Los Angeles, California. Jack Shephard was the son of Christian Shephard, the Chief of Surgery at St. Sebastian Hospital. Growing up Jack had a life that many children could only see on television. A big house, a swimming pool, but a father that was intensely busy with his work. Jack's father had left him with advice that was harsh between father and son at a young age. His father told him 'avoid being a hero, because you don't have what it takes to cope with failing'. It's hard to say, but this may have driven Jack Shephard to succeed even more and follow in his fathers footsteps. As for the title of this section, well Jack Shephard has always had a strong sense of right and wrong.

II. A job, a means to an end, or a told you so.

Jack Shephard's father was tough, but Jack looked up to him and attended UCLA med school with the intention of becoming a surgeon like his old man. Growing up in LA, Jack was big into sports, and did play some hockey in high school and in his freshman year at UCLA he made the NCAA Division II hockey team. A natural centerman with a strong work ethic was the only scouting report we could find from that year. The statistics show that Shephard scored three goals and had five assists for a total of eight points in the twenty-one games he played during that season at UCLA. After that season, Shephard retired from hockey to focus on his budding career and residency as a surgeon as a med student. He graduated a year early and began working at St. Sebastian along side his father, as an emergency room surgeon. Did he really love the job, yes he loves helping people, but was he trying to prove to his father he could do it too? Likely a bit of both.

III. Oceanic Flight 815

Let's fast forward a few years. Jack's father died in Sydney, Australia and Jack had to retrieve the body and bring him back to Los Angeles for the funeral. At this time, Jack had been married, had a child who was now a teenager, been divorced and developed a drinking habit. His life was a high end mess. On the flight home from Sydney to Los Angeles, his life would change forever. Ocean Flight 815 hit turbulence before making a quick descent, losing air pressure, and the plane broke into two, landing on the beach of an Island in the South Pacific Ocean.

IV. The Island

We could write a 25,000 document detailing the events that took place on the Island, and how they changed the lives of all the Oceanic passengers. Jack became the leader that he is today on the Island, he took charge and with his calm demeanor and his quick thinking problem solving abilities to quickly became the unofficial leader of the survivors. After 110 days on the Island some of the survivors, known as the Oceanic Six, which included Jack, they flew off on a rescue helicopter that reached the Island in search of missing members, Desmond Hume. Trying to leave the Island proved difficult as the helicopter crashed, leaving the Oceanic Six to use a life raft in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to survive. A yacht found them, and the six under Jacks leadership decided to lie about everything that happened on the Island, and say they were the only six survivors of Ocean 815. The rest of the Jack's story includes lies, alcohol and break downs, until he finally makes it back to the Island.

V. Trying to get Back

Jack Shephard was awarded a golden pass by Oceanic Airlines to fly anywhere in the world whenever he wanted for free. Living in Los Angeles again after leaving the Island, the Island quickly consumed Jack's brain again. He needed to go back, his life was nothing compared to what was happening on the Island. Now he constantly flies from Los Angeles to Sydney, Singapore, Tokyo every weekend just to grab a drink at the airport and fly back. He's hoping the plane crashes because it's the only way he knows to get back to the Island, until now.

Jacob has met Jack Shephard before, but Jack doesn't know it.

VI. Jacob

Jack Shephard knows the protector of the Island as some man named Jacob. While flying every weekend he constantly searches for clues on who Jacob is and how to contact someone that knows him. And this week he found him - Jacob. They've yet to come into contact, but Jack Shephard believes that the Helsinki Titans ice hockey team has some connection to the Island. Jacob joined the Titans organization, but never played a game for them. Jack Shephard now believes that this was a clue for him to join the Titans organization as a path to returning to the Island, so we come to the present day with Jack Shephard looking for his old hockey equipment and committing to the Titans for Season 56.

VII. First Steps in the VHLM

Jack Shephard will be hitting the ice soon after an off-season of intense training he is ready to be drafted by one of the five VHLM teams. He doesn't care which one drafts his because his only goal is to play for the Helsinki Titans. None of the VHLM teams are located in the Pacific Ocean so flying back and forth isn't an option for him anymore so any of the five teams as none have an advantage over the others. It will be interesting to see how much a late declaring VHLM prospect can fair in the VHLM with players that have been practicing for 4 weeks from the trade deadline and the overage players still in the league.

Anything to get back - even ice hockey?!

VIII. Conclusion

Welcome to the world of ice hockey, Jack Shephard. We support you and your goals of returning to the Island and becoming the protector of everything you believe in. We look forward to seeing Jack Shephard lace up the skates for the Helsinki Titans next season, and when he faces off with a familiar friend in Quebec of John Locke, and when he finally gets his first glimpse of Jacob through his goalie mask. Although no one has ever seen Jacob without his helmet on, so contact between Jacob, John and Jack may be limited to on the ice. It doesn't matter for Jack Shephard, he has one goal in mind - returning in the Island.
