After a semi break last week, time to get back on that grind. Hamilton made 5 selections in the Season 5 VHL Entry Draft. Let's take a look at who they selected. 

 

Round 1, Pick 7 (via Stockholm) : Right Wing Tomas Ziegler

Career Reg. Season Stats: 499 GP | 228 G | 363 A | 591 P

Career Playoff Stats: 59 GP | 20 G | 24 A | 44 P

 

With the 7th overall pick in the draft, Hamilton came up and announced they would be taking Tomas Ziegler. He went on to play in 499 career games, scoring 228 goals and assisting on 363 goals for 591 points in his career. He also played in 59 playoff games, scoring 20 goals and assisting on 24 goals for 44 points. He was a very good player throughout his career and he won back to back Continental Cups in Season 10 and Season 11. Tomas is one of those very good players but unfortunately wasn't good enough to make the Hall of Fame.

 

Round 2, Pick 15 (via Stockholm): Center Brandon Best

Career Playoff Stats: 5 GP | 0 G | 1 A | 1 P

 

Brandon Best had a very good career despite not much playoff success. He played in 361 games, scoring 199 goals and assisting on 269 goals for 468 points. He only managed 5 playoff games though, assisting on 1 goal for 1 point. His number 10 hangs in the arena of the now New York Americans the team in which his Hamilton Canucks moved too. He was unfortunately stuck on some bad Hamilton teams, which is why his playoff record is so bad. However, he is still one of the best to lace it up for that franchise, not bad for a 15th overall pick.

 

Round 3, Pick 19 (via Avangard): Center Storm Lazorek

Career Playoff Stats: N/A

 

Storm Lazorek, despite the cool name he played in just 1 season scoring 1 goal and assisting on 2 goals for just 3 points. All he has in the VHL is a cool name.

 

Round 3, Pick 22: Goaltender Alex Gegeny

Career Playoff Stats: 43 GP | 23 W | 14 L | 6 OTL | 0.933 SV% | 2.44 G.A.A | 2 SO | 0 A

 

The Canucks took goalie Alex Gegeny with the 22nd overall pick in the Season 5 VHL Entry Draft. He proved to be quite the steal playing in 389 games and compiling a record of 262-91-28 with a 0.929 save percentage and a 2.24 G.A.A with 45 shutouts and 2 assists. He played in 43 playoff games, putting up a record of 23-14-6 with a 0.933 save percentage and a 2.44 G.A.A with 2 shutouts. He won a Continental Cup in Season 9 and was later enshrined into the VHL Hall of Fame. Not bad for a 4th round pick who had to wait until 21 other players got their names called.

 

Round 4, Pick 30: Goaltender Drazen Miklavz

Career Playoff Stats: N/A

 

Drazen Miklavz had a nice stint as backup playing in 11 games and going 8-1-1 with a 0.910 save percentage and a 3.08 G.A.A with 1 shutout. Other than that though, he didn't do much in his career.

 

Verdict

Ziegler, Best and Gegeny were all hits for Hamilton in this draft. Going 3/5 isn't that bad to be honest.
