Claimed:6 points pls part 28/29

Recommended Posts

Wow, we are already over halfway through the Season 4 VHL Entry draft, next up are the Helsinki Titans and the Seattle Bears. Helsinki had 3 picks, but none in the first round while on the flip side, Seattle had back to back picks in the 1st round.

2nd Round, Pick 13 (via Vasteras): Center Tyler Donati

Career Reg. Season Stats: 288 GP | 32 G | 91 A | 123 P

Career Playoff Stats: 9 GP | 0 G | 1 A | 1 P

Tyler Donati was a player that started off the 2nd hald of the draft at pick 13. He was a decent player during his career playing in 288 games, scoring 32 goals and assisting on 91 goals for 123 points. He definitely liked to dish the puck more so than passing. He only played in 9 playoff games over 4 seasons and only had 1 assist. He was pretty decent considering a 2nd half of the draft player but not good enough to be considered a hit because he was nothing more than depth.

2nd Round, Pick 15: Goaltender Josh Smith

Career Reg. Season Stats: 142 GP | 19 W | 78 L | 8 OTL | 0.896 SV% | 5.44 G.A.A | 0 SO | 0 A

Career Playoff Stats: 1 GP | 0 W | 1 L | 0 OTL | 0.833 SV% | 5.14 G.A.A | 0 SO | 0 A

Josh Smith played in 142 games in his career which is pretty neat considering he was a late round draft pick but he has a career record of 19-78-8. He did have a very respectable 0.896 save percentage though. You have to take into account this is around the same time Scotty Campbell was putting up 140+ point season and many of the top line players put up 100+ points. He played in 1 playoff game with 1 loss and a 0.833 save percentage and a 5.14 G.A.A. Not a very good playoff showing.

3rd Round, Pick 23: Defenseman Jonathan Coward

Career Reg. Season Stats: 214 GP | 21 G | 82 A | 103 P

Career Playoff Stats: 21 GP | 1 G | 4 A | 5 P

With the 2nd last pick of the draft, the Helsinki Titans picked defenseman Jonathan Coward who played in 214 games. This in itself is impressive because the rest of this draft class much less the 3rd round, played more than 2 seasons. He scored 21 goals and assisted on 82 goals for 103 points. He also played in 21 playoff games scoring 1 goal and assisting on 4 for 5 points. He was a very good depth pick up in the last round with the 2nd last pick.

Verdict

I want to call Coward a hit because he is the only good player to come out of the 3rd round, However, he only played in 3 seasons, I like to name players hits if they played more than half of the allowed seasons. Sorry Jonathan Coward. Helsinki had 0 hits in this draft but they Coward was close and they did pick up some nice depth players, just no home runs but a couple of singles.

1st Round, Pick 2: Left Wing Derek Harland

Career Reg. Season Stats: 504 GP | 292 G | 407 A | 699 P

Career Playoff Stats: 34 GP | 10 G | 20 A | 30 P

Derek Harland was a great pick up at 2nd overall. He played in 504 games, scoring 292 goals and assisting on 407 goals for 699 points. It really bugs me when players retire 1 point away from a pretty cool milestone in this case 700 points but it is what it is. He also played in 34 playoff games, scoring 10 goals and assisting on 20 goals for 30 points. He won a Continental Cup in Season 4 and Season 5. You take one look at his numbers and wonder why he isn't in the Hall of Fame but you have to wonder if his numbers were inflated by playing with Scotty Campbell.

1st, Round, Pick 3 (via Avangard): Left Wing Anders Heissman

Career Reg. Season Stats: 144 GP | 125 G | 123 A | 248 P

Career Playoff Stats: 29 GP | 20 G | 12 A | 32 P

Here is one of the biggest what could have beens in VHL history. Anders Heissman played just 2 seasons but he scored 125 goals and assisted on 123 goals for 248 points in 144 games. He also played in 29 playoff games scoring 20 goals and assisted on 12 goals for 32 points. He almost scored 1 goal and assisted on 1 goal per game in his short career that is impressive. He also scored 20 goals in 29 playoff games which is another impressive feat. He won a Continental Cup in Season 4 and 5 before he called it a career.

Verdict

I think the Bears hit on both draftees, even though Heissman played in just 2 seasons, his impact was felt.
