S49 VHL Trivia: FINAL RESULTS

Answers for Week 5, the last week of S49 which of course was worth double.

 

PART A
1. Who was the last goalie to be taken first overall? (Credit to Bojo)
ANSWER: Niklaus Mikaelson back in S41. Sinclair, G. Clegane, and Zhumbayev have gone 2nd since then and Wingate was drafted 3rd for some reason.

 

2. How many cities have won the Victory Cup? (Credit to sterling)
ANSWER: Twelve. Calgary, New York, Toronto, Seattle, Quebec, Davos, Helsinki, Riga, and Stockholm have been regular season champions. Davos also won in Avangard in S7, while Stockholm won in both Vasteras and Madrid. Cologne has never won the Victory Cup.

 

3. Who has the all-time highest save percentage in the playoffs (minimum of 10 games played)? (Credit to Phil)
ANSWER: S8 playoff hero Travis Willcox has a .938 save percentage from his only playoff season (13 games in a finals loss with Riga).

 

4. How many players have won the VHLM MVP award more than once? (Credit to solas)
ANSWER: Two, early days legend Tyler Vassell (S7 and S9 MVP), followed by the creatively named Zach Parise (S12 and S13). The dark days when inactives ruled the VHLM.

 

PART B
What is the longest playoff drought in VHL history and how many seasons did it last?
ANSWER: Hamilton made the playoffs in S4 and then waited 7 seasons until New York did the same in S12. This was almost matched by a 6-season run by Vasteras from S19 to S24, but remains the record, which looks particularly stark in comparison to the Americans' recent success.
