Matej Križ - LW

Welcome to Rookie Showcase and our profile of Matej Kriz. Kriz is a product of Zličín, Czech Republic, and a big one at that as he weighs in at 6'3" and 225 lbs. This big Czech has a mean streak a mile long and will be looking to create some havoc on every shift. Kriz is a player every team hates to play against, but is loyal to the team he plays for and a great teammate.

Kriz moved to Washington State in the U.S.A. at the age of 16 to pursue a career in North American hockey. He was drafted by the Tri-City Americans and would play through his prime seasons and would be kept on as an over-ager due to his high level of play. He has moved on from the Dub to the VHLM and is looking to continue his career.

Matej Kriz is a solid two-way player who will be billed as a power forward early in his career, but could project into a top line elite scorer who loves to throw the body. He will become a staple on the penalty kill for the Yukon Rush and should retain that spot in the VHL.

What to Look Forward To!

Matej Kriz is a strong skater and unmovable when he gets set up in front of the net, and has a high level of endurance that helps him skate for days. Kriz is constantly moving his feet and uses his big frame to protect the puck from defenders. Kriz is a right-handed shot on the left side and will look to be the pass target when he's on the ice. Built to man the penalty kill and his nose for the net will surely mean he'll see quite a few short handed markers in his future. Incorporating all his skills, size and propensity to get the opposition off their game means the biggest part of Kriz's game will be his ability to draw penalties and ruffle some feathers every time he steps on the ice.

What Not to Expect!

Kriz's hands aren't the strongest and don't expect to see many Zoidbergian deke maneuvers on the ice, but he has been improving on his puck handling skills so that should change in the future. Kriz is a bit of a puck hog and will be looking to receive a pass rather then give one, and his goals to assist ratio will reflect that. With the edge he plays with comes a score of penalty minutes, and that could be a hindrance to his team.

Career Prediction

Matej Kriz brings a solid mix of scoring ability and hard-nosed play and will find himself listed as a top tier power foward or elite level scorer in the league. The future looks bright for this young prospect who holds a lot of promise for any team interested in taking him into the VHL.
