VHL This Week

Season 42 Edition 1

Welcome to the first edition of Season 42's VHL This Week!  Hockey has started back up, much to the excitement of everyone in the league.  This has been a highly anticipated season for a number of reasons, the first being an expected shift of power.  Some teams have begun to meet the high expectations set prior to the season while others continue to disappoint.  It's still very early in the season, though, and there is plenty of times for players and teams to turn things around.

Game Discussion

This week, we'll naturally take a look at the first game of Season 42 between the Dynamo and Vikings.  This is a battle of the new blood in the European Conference, with both teams expected to fight for a playoff spot after having lottery picks last season.  This game started out with a dominant performance by Davos, although Blaine Olynick was one fire, frustrating his opponents.  But twelve minutes in, the puck finally found its way past the veteran goaltender by way of a Devin Sundberg goal, his first with his new team after signing as a free agent this off-season.  Despite Davos' continued domination, the Vikings were able to limit their first period output to just one.  The Vikings came out much stronger the next period, making things a bit difficult for the Dynamo but clearly not too tough as they extended their lead to two just nine minutes into the period off an Azi Ali one-timer.  Ten minutes later, Sundberg got his second goal of the game to score a crushing goal to put Davos ahead by three with less than a minute left before the final frame.  Playing a defensive game, the Dynamo limited the Vikings' opportunities but were unable to help rookie Callum Sinclair earn a shutout in his first VHL start as forward Teuvo Ruutu finally put the Vikings on the board.  Unfortunately, that would be the final goal of the game as the Dynamo escaped with a relatively easy 3-1 win.
