  1. S57 Draft Talent Rankings: Defensemen Casey Jones, Mats Johnsson, and Keaton Louth all have 1st round potential Part 1: Goaltenders Part 2: Left Wingers Part 3: Right Wingers Part 4: Centers Rating System David Ng Nationality: Grade: 1.0C VHL Comparable: Drahoslav Detlev Analysis: Why do I even give these guys ratings? Colton Rayne Nationality: Grade: 7.5C VHL Comparable: Aleksei Federov Analysis: Colton Rayne has burst onto the VHLM scene in S56. The American-born defender began his VHL career with Team USA at the World Juniors prior to this season, gaining valuable experience via the more seasoned members of Team USA. That experience looks to have paid off, as the Las Vegas Ace currently sits at over a PPG. Rayne projects to be a well-rounded two-way defender who may not be a #1D, but certainly a serviceable top pairing defender should he stay committed; his agency is back in the VHL after a very long hiatus, so some scouts see this as a possible red flag. Thomas Sankara Nationality: Grade: 7.0B VHL Comparable: Maksym Barnyashev Analysis: Thomas Sankara has the honor of being the VHL's first player from Burkina Faso, and likely the last as well. The VHL has had it's fair share of African-born players, some turning into superstars and some turning into busts; I think Sankara will fall in the middle. On one hand, he's part of an agency that has been around the VHL for quite a long time, and said agency knows its way around the league, but on the other hand, said agency hasn't truly had a gamebreaking player since the S20s (Andreas Bjorkman and Connor Evans). The players since then haven't been bad by any means, but they haven't been dynamic players either. Sankara has all the opportunity in the world to outperform this ranking, so he will definitely be an interesting one to watch. Klaus Baustein Nationality: Grade: 5.5D VHL Comparable: Izidors Balders Analysis: The German-born defender has a terrible work ethic, having not even shown up to the gym once so far in his VHL career. His agency hasn't had a good player in a long time, and Baustein doesn't look to be bucking this trend anytime soon. Ko Kane Nationality: Grade: 8.0C VHL Comparable: Fabio Jokinen Analysis: Possibly the most controversial figure in this upcoming draft, Ko Kane definitely has the ability and pedigree to reach his full potential as a top pairing defender. The biggest thing going against him is his agency's demands for where he plays and who he plays for. Kane's agency is known for being brash and antagonistic, and this shows through Ko, as he patrols the blueline with a bit of a mean streak and a chip on his shoulder. Kane is also known to lay out dirty hits and low blows from time to time, which intimidates some opponents, while only antagonizing/agitating others. Ahn Jung-Seong Nationality: Grade: 2.0F VHL Comparable: Teli Briadora Analysis: South Korea represent. Casey Jones Nationality: Grade: 8.0A VHL Comparable: Bobby Digital Analysis: From the dark streets of New York City to the frozen rinks of Las Vegas, Casey Jones has made the transition from crime-fighting vigilante to star hockey player seamlessly. Jones is a fantastic skater, and dictates the flow of player with and without the puck. For all intents and purposes, Jones is a lock to become a future #1 VHL defender; expect to see him likely be drafted within the top 5 picks; and if he isn't all the teams that passed on this American are going to be wishing that they hadn't. Charles Cote Nationality: Grade: 6.5C VHL Comparable: Luca Volkov Analysis: Cote doesn't really have any one big skill that sticks out right now, in terms of development he's quite raw right now. But alas, he does look to have potential. His upside looks to be that of a middle pairing, two-way defender who doesn't really pull you out of your seat with any fancy dangles or huge checks; his playstyle is just quietly going about his business, while always playing it safe/rarely joining the offensive rush. The biggest reason his rating here is arguably low is that his agency is new to the league; if he sticks around and continues to improve, his draft stock can only get better and better. Keaton Louth Nationality: Grade: 8.0B VHL Comparable: Felix Savard Analysis: The Vancouver, BC native is absolutely tearing up the VHLM right now; Keaton Louth leads all defensemen in the VHLM with 40 points in 22 games, second only to Las Vegas' Sergei Komarov in terms of all scoring. He's producing at an MVP-level pace right now, and if he can keep it up, he just might unseat one or more of the higher-ranked defenders in the draft rankings. Louth has all the makings of a top-pairing defender at the VHL level; he may not win a lot of individual awards, but he definitely projects as a very reliable blueliner. The only thing going against Louth is that he is his agency's first player in the VHL, which could make some GMs hesitant about picking him over other defenders in the draft who are part of more veteran agencies. But I don't think that'll happen, because Louth appears very committed to the league; dare I say he reminds me of another storied 1st-generation star, Ethan Osborne? Shin Watanabe Nationality: Grade: 1.5F VHL Comparable: COL D1 Analysis: Likely to return to the land of the rising sun after just one VHLM season. Mats Johnsson Nationality: Grade: 8.0C VHL Comparable: Roman Sokolov Analysis: Johnsson's agency may be the most historically successful of all the S57 defense draftees, representing not one, not two, but three Hall of Fame players (Matthew Pogge, Branden Snelheid, and Matt Bailey). Obviously you would like to think that Johnsson has similar potential to those three, but that subject looks fuzzy. While the agency struck gold on it's first three players, the next three weren't nearly as acclaimed. Will Johnsson go the way of the 1st three, or the last three? Personally I think he'll fall somewhere in between, becoming a sound defenseman #1D/#2D in his prime. Vit Laisanitselikol Nationality: Grade: 2.5D VHL Comparable: Marty McDouglas Analysis: Definitely one of the most complicated names in VHL history. Bonér Nationality: Grade: 8.5B VHL Comparable: Hudson Abbott Analysis: The big D from Brussels may have the most practice hours of all the defensive prospects, but he certainly is one of the less-flashier players. His game relies mostly on physical play and intimidation, rather than skill and finesse. His offensive skills are subpar aside from a rocket slapshot, although his accuracy with said shot is so low it almost negates the effectiveness of it. Despite this, Bonér almost certainly has the makings of a shutdown #1 defender, but for him to truly become a force in the VHL, his offensive game will need to step up. Gary Cheung Nationality: Grade: 1.0D VHL Comparable: SEA D4 Analysis: Future HOFer future zamboni driver. *For Schmeckeldorf
  2. S57 Draft Talent Rankings: Centers Chase Keller looks to be the most sought-after prospect in this draft Part 1: Goaltenders Part 2: Left Wingers Part 3: Right Wingers Rating System Karen Mak Nationality: Grade: 1.0F VHL Comparable: Ugot Change Analysis: Not making the VHL. Calder O'Callahan Nationality: Grade: 7.5C VHL Comparable: Shawn Gretzky Analysis: O'Callahan's agency is new to the VHL, but the fact remains that he looks like a very intriguing offensive prospect. The American-born center has good hockey sense and a high compete-level. Should this continue throughout his career, expect O'Callahan to make some noise in the VHL as a possible 1st line, first-generation player. Arbin Asipi Nationality: Grade: 6.0C VHL Comparable: Luigi De Rossi Analysis: Asipi may not have the flair or notoriety that some of his fellow S57 draftees have, but he still definitely has potential to make it to the VHL one day, I'm just not sure that he'll be a gamebreaking player at the pro level. Arbin's ceiling is mostly as a #2C who can put up around 0.5PPG; whichever team selects him in the draft needs to know they're getting a project player who may take some extra time to develop. Chase Keller Nationality: Grade: 9.0A VHL Comparable: Kameron Taylor Analysis: Keller is without a doubt, the consensus-top forward in this draft, and most likely the very best player overall as well. Keller comes from one of the most prestigious player agencies in VHL history, so Clayton becoming a superstar is practically a given already. He has elite-tier hockey sense, and has all the tools to be a dynamic offensive cornerstone in the VHL. The only remote concern of scouts is his defensive game, but that should come in time with experience. Rudy Tabootie Nationality: n/a Grade: 5.5C VHL Comparable: Viet Trieu Analysis: The ChalkZone resident has decided to try hockey - we aren't sure if that's going to work out for him though. If he does ever make it to the VHL, he very likely won't be a star, and rather a depth scorer. Mike Szatkowski III Nationality: Grade: 7.5D VHL Comparable: Conrad Jenkins Analysis: A rare 3rd generation VHL player, Szatkowski III's agency has had a few stud players in the past, but it doesn't look like this one will be the same. He has all the skill of his father and grandfather, but Szatkowski III doesn't have the love for the game that they had, which explains his lackadaisical effort shown during practice and training. If he applied himself, Szatkowski could definitely be one of the top players in this draft. Longrod Von Danglecoch Nationality: Grade: 6.5C VHL Comparable: Jake Scheel Analysis: Von Danglecoch is a newcomer to this draft class, only joining a few days ago, but he looks to have potential. When driven, his agency looks like it could definitely produce a VHL level player, but will that happen this time around? If it does, expect Danglecoch to become a solid complimentary scorer in the VHL. John Forrester Nationality: Grade: 5.0D VHL Comparable: JJ Dynamite Analysis: Forrester's draft stock is plummeting with each passing day; he hasn't shown up to practice once and has no notable strengths as a hockey player. He has practically no chance to make the VHL. Launchpad McQuack Nationality: Grade: 7.5D VHL Comparable: Ted Doughty Analysis: McQuack has all the potential in the world to turn out to be a very effective VHL player, but one big thing detracts from his rating being higher: his agency's penchant for retiring on players early. Since S40, McQuack's agency has had seven players [including McQuack], and only two of them have surpassed 500 TPE. Further not helping McQuack's case, both of those 500+ TPE players were goaltenders; you need to go all the way back to the S34 draft to find his agency's last successful forward, Davey Jones. Recent history is split down the middle for the agency though, as Astrid Moon is currently one of the best goalies in the VHL and looks to be around for the long haul, although VHLM Forever, the player before McQuack, retired after only one season. Should McQuack stick out his career, he will certainly be an impact player at the VHL level, but that's the kicker, will he stick around? Sakamoto Tetsuya Nationality: Grade: 2.0D VHL Comparable: Analysis: Sakamoto doesn't look like he's going to have 1/10th the career some of his fellow countrymen, such as Koji Yamazaki, have had. Decent skater though. Ulyanin Namestnikov Nationality: Grade: 6.5C VHL Comparable: Evgeny Namestnikov Analysis: The Canadian player with the Russian last name is a bit of an enigma, as some nights he looks dominant on the rink, while other nights he's invisible. His work ethic appears to match this, as some times he's the hardest worker in the gym, and other nights he doesn't even show up. His agency has a bit of a similar pedigree, producing two solid players in Joshua Rubin and Evgeny Namestnikov, but two duds in KYLO and Nick Nemeth. If Ulyanin can put it all together and apply himself night in and night out, he will surely be a serviceable #2C for any VHL team. Barry Szeto Nationality: Grade: 1.0D VHL Comparable: TOR C1 Analysis: Neither he, nor his twin, Alan, are making it to the VHL. For Schmeckeldorf
  3. S57 Draft Talent Rankings: Right Wingers Matt Denning and Jules Cedric-Labrie are just two of the many RWers in this class Part 1: Goaltenders Part 2: Left Wingers Rating System Matt Denning Nationality: Grade: 7.0C VHL Comparable: AK47 Analysis: Matt Denning looks like he could definitely make an impact at the VHL, although exactly how much impact he has is up in the air for sure. The BC native appears to have all the tools to be able to put up points in the VHL; he has a VHL-level shot already, he has good hockey sense, and his skating is above the level of his current peers as well. The big knock scouts have against Denning is that his agency is brand-new to the VHL, and there is no guarantee that he sticks around for the long haul. If he does though, look for Denning to become an elite 2nd line winger or low-end 1st liner. Daniel Yip Nationality: Grade: 1.5D VHL Comparable: Logan Xylon Analysis: Yip was just released by his VHLM team for his pathetic work ethic, so that just about sums up his VHL potential. Sadio Salah Nationality: Grade: 8.0D VHL Comparable: Motherfucker Sharpe Analysis: Salah might be the biggest boom-or-bust prospect in this entire draft. His agency has produced Hall-of-Famers and superstars alike, so many pundits hope that Salah can continue this trend. However, it just doesn't look like he's going to reach that level of stardom, given his current work ethic. Sadio rarely shows up to practice, and even when he does, he mails it in. This trend is seeping into games as well, as you can see Salah taking multiple shifts off over the course of the same. It's a shame though, as he oozes offensive skill, and when driven, can stickhandle through the entire opposing team and score. Salah has 1st line potential but a 4th line work ethic right now. Rianna Tam Nationality: Grade: 1.0C VHL Comparable: Hailey Cattrall Analysis: Not going anywhere fast. Jules Cedric-Labrie Nationality: Grade: 6.5B VHL Comparable: Sami Zayn Analysis: Finally, a Frenchman is back in the VHL. After a long absence, France has VHL representation again. They get it in the hard-hitting grinder Jules Cedric-Labrie, a Lyon native. Cedric-Labrie projects as a bone-crunching pest at the VHL level, should he make it all the way. He plays a nearly identical style as Helsinki Titans winger Sami Zayn, and if Cedric-Labrie can reach the level that Zayn is, whatever team that drafts him will be more than happy. Carmen Fung Nationality: Grade: 1.5D VHL Comparable: Ales Blasek Analysis: Not making the VHL. Oskar Ingolfsson Nationality: Grade: 7.0B VHL Comparable: Xander Finn Analysis: Icelander Oskar Ingolfsson may not have the talent of fellow Icelandic legend Grimm Jonsson, but that doesn't mean Ingolfsson doesn't project to be a VHL player either. The Suðureyri-native plays a physical game, and uses his bruising hits and muscle to overpower opponents in the corners and battles for pucks. He isn't a natural scorer, so this physical play will most likely be his calling card for his career. Said career will most likely be spent on checking lines at the VHL level, where Ingolfsson will do his best to wear down opponents with his physicality. X-Wing @Aliciousness Nationality: Grade: 6.0C VHL Comparable: Max von Hohenzollern Analysis: Aliciousness is new, so his rating here could definitely change. We don't know too much about him, only that his agency is new to the league. According to scouts who have seen @Aliciousness play, he projects as a scoring forward. Birkir Hólm Guðnason Nationality: Grade: 7.5C VHL Comparable: Lukas Muller Analysis: Guðnason certainly has a huge weight on his shoulders as a franchise cornerstone for the Cologne Express right now. As one of the few prospects in a bare cupboard, the Express will need Guðnason to develop hard and fast. He has big potential no doubt, but will it be big enough to carry Cologne out of the league's dungeon right now? The Icelander has all the makings of a star forward, with great hockey sense and a lethal wrist shot, so Cologne is lucky to get a player of Guðnason's skill level for free. David Kiaskov Nationality: Grade: 6.0B VHL Comparable: Verner Reinholdt Analysis: David Kiaskov can do it all; the Canadian-born winger's playstyle is a "jack-of-all-trades, master of none" one. He is already well-versed in the VHL game, playing for Team Canada at the S55 VHL World Junior Championships and gaining valuable experience as a member of the forward core. Kiaskov isn't a sure thing to make the VHL since his agency is new, but we've got a good feeling about him; I think he'll see time in the VHL eventually, although he may be a bit of a project pick. I could definitely see him as a very good utility winger who you can send onto the ice in all situations. For Boner
  4. S57 Draft Talent Rankings: Left Wingers Jeff Gow is the most prized Left Wing in this draft class Rating System Alan Szeto Nationality: Grade: 4.5D VHL Comparable: Jack Kraken Analysis: Along with his brother Barry, Alan Szeto is one of the VHL's Szeto twins, although don't look for him to have as much success as his NHL doppelganger, Daniel Sedin. Szeto looks disinterested with the VHL and doesn't project to ever even make a dent into the VHLM. Jeff Gow Nationality: Grade: 7.5B VHL Comparable: John Locke Analysis: American-born Jeff Gow is easily the most polished LW prospect in this draft class so far, as he has more than double the TPE than the 2nd best. Gow is an offense-first, ask-questions-later type of player through and through. Any scout can tell you that his biggest knock is his defensive game, but his production is large enough to offset this. Gow's agency is reliable, so look for Gow to almost definitely reach his potential as a low-end 1st liner/elite 2nd line forward in the VHL. If he can round out his defensive game, he could absolutely become one of the better forwards in the league during his prime. Kelly Chan Nationality: Grade: 2.0F VHL Comparable: Daring Do Analysis: Chan may have a similar playstyle to Daring Do, but don't look for her to reach anywhere near the success level that Do has had. Chan shows no drive to improve, and will never sniff the VHL. There have been more than a few talented women to play in the VHL (Diana Maxwell, Naomi Young, etc.), but Chan won't be one of them. Ozamataz Buckshank Nationality: Grade: 6.5C VHL Comparable: Daryl Dortch Analysis: Buckshank is an intriguing prospect; he broke onto the scene in the World Juniors and improving a large amount in his first few days, but has gone AWOL in the week(s) since. The Swede certainly has the potential to make a VHL roster in the future, but he definitely has some developing left to do. His max potential right now looks to be a checking line forward who can chip in a goal or two here and there. Ariana Grande Nationality: Grade: 1.5D VHL Comparable: Emma Watson Analysis: See Kelly Chan's analysis above. Shiro Nationality: Grade: 6.5C VHL Comparable: Fook Yu Analysis: Hokkaido, Japan, native Shiro is a prototypical power forward in the making, and scouts are on the fence about whether or not he will be able to make an impact at the VHL level. He has shown some good promise so far, but the language barrier looks to be the biggest issue for him so far, and it certainly isn't an easy barrier to overcome. Despite this though, Shiro shoots the puck hard and hits opposing players harder; if he's going to make it to the VHL he will do so based on those two skills alone, the rest of his game will come later. For Schmeckeldorf
